Farmer-to-Farmer Field Trip: Covelo
June 19, 2017 @ 9:00 am - 7:00 pm
Mendocino county is enormous- and most residents have never made it to Round Valley to explore the amazing resilience and creativity of Covelo! This Summer Solstice is your chance to get an inside look at two farms in Covelo: Live Power Community Farm and Covelo Organic. Farmer-to-farmer field trips give you a chance to see the inner workings of farms to learn new techniques, tips, and tools.
June 19th, we will caravan out to Covelo where we will have the chance to visit:
Since 1988, Covelo Organic has been committed to organic vegetable production. On this diverse farm, vegetables and fruits are produced for a CSA, farmers market, and for sale through the Food Hub. This intensive operation is run by Brandon Gatto, previously run by Tom Palley. Their systems are efficient and pump out an enormous amount of food each year of of 10 acres.

Live Power Community Farm is a 50-acre, solar electric and horse-powered, diversified, certified Biodynamic farm. Four acres are devoted to an intensive vegetable garden hosting some 60 varieties of vegetables and herbs. This farm produces vegetables, fruits, and flowers, and field and forage crops for hay, grain, and pasture. Live Power is supported entirely by its CSA group and school field trips. We will have an interactive tour from Stephen Decatur who will demonstrate how they make their own potting soil and compost, track their crop records, manage their production entirely for CSA, make Biodynamic preparations, and more.
