In this class Donald Pivec draws on his own experience to discuss how to start farming on a shoestring budget. The class will cover land and tool access, drawing on social capital, creating a scalable vision, and sources of income.
Description
In this class, Donald Pivec leads us through the steps to begin farming without borrowing a lot of money and “on a shoestring”. Donald is the creator of Meandering Farmers and farming director at the New Agrarian Collective. Drawing on a working example, Meandering Farmers, Donald will show how to create the conditions conducive to starting a small farm with $2,000 of “seed money.” The techniques presented will focus on: Traditional vs Social Capital, Land and Equipment Access, Starting Small with Scalable Vision, and Off-farm Compliments. We will begin with an in-depth description of an historical working example, Meandering Farmers, and finish with “Obstacles, Challenges, and Drawbacks,” to this way of creating a farm business.
